Echocardiography
This is a very informative test and is integral to modern cardiology. This test allows the cardiologist to see the heart in real time, using ultrasound very similar to pregnancy ultrasounds. The hearts size, pumping and valve functions are assessed. You may hear terms like "Ejection Fraction" which is an estimate of the pumping ability of the heart, normally above 50%. Other terms include "Stenosis" which is a restriction in valve opening; and "Regurgitation" which describes leaking of the valve. On most occasions, you will see the cardiologist for review after having performed the procedure with one of our Technicians.
We offer a type of appointment called "Echocardiogram Only", which is where the procedure is done without a consult with a cardiologist. If you are an Oncology patient or a patient currently in Lismore Base Hospital (who book for you!), we offer these appointments to fast-track your appointment date/time. Any patient can receive this type of appointment, so long as your referring doctor agrees to a 'no consult appointment'.
You will need to expose your chest for this test. This is usually performed by both female and male Sonographers. If you wish to have your procedure performed by a Technician of a certain gender, please let our Secretarial staff know when the appointment is booked so we can arrange for your request - your comfort and concerns are very important to us, so please do not be afraid to let us know!
Appropriate sensitivity and professionalism is maintained at all times.
